October 13th 2015

I had hoped for one last amazing fall day,
but waited too long to enjoy the beautiful morning sunshine.
I was comfortable in capris and a t shirt,
but at 1pm had to grab a jacket to go enjoy Waterworks Park.

I made some squash soup today,
and got RAVE reviews.
Glad I posted the recipe
http://ourtestkitchen.blogspot.ca/

Doing another leftover recipe tomorrow.
A LOT of leftover apple crisp!
So I will be making it into cookies tomorrow!

Today was not too exciting.
Working on the organizer.
2nd week started today....
11 weeks until Christmas.

Judy had a bad start to her day,
came home
did homework
ate
ran back out the door.

So movie night here for me.
Pj's and caramel popcorn.

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving Weekend.
Good night from John Street.

October 13th to October 16th
 The week in an overview

Nothing too fancy here. Instead, this tool you created will simply make things easier in the weeks to come. Is your binder ready to go? Slow and steady wins the holiday Challenge each year, slowly doing tasks little by little over the next weeks to get us through the holidays, so we can enjoy the experience instead of being stressed out.

Those of you who did this challenge last year, will know just how amazing the process is. My following of this program last year, had me resting the whole two weeks before Christmas EVE!!!!!

Plan Your Halloween Traditions:

Including Food To Serve. There is no way to do it all in one day, so spread it out over a couple of weeks. To make it happen though, do some planning ahead, budget some times for the events, and make sure we have all the supplies needed at the right time. The Halloween assignment for the week is to consider these questions, and take steps to make sure you get these things done:· What are your family's Halloween traditions?· Do you realistically have time to do them all? If not, which are your favourites, and make those the priority. If you are carving pumpkins make sure you take into account when you want to get them and where. Consider blocking out time to get a pumpkin, pick some apples AND have your family portrait taken at the same time! Pumpkins begin to rot after they are carved, but take too much time on Halloween night Make sure to plan ahead. Remember that Halloween is on a SATURDAY this year, which may mean more or less trick or treaters and many more party invites. Think about what food you want to serve that day too. Make a list of all the food and non-food supplies you need, and buy them little by little if you can buy them early. Do you buy gifts for “special” trick or treaters that you should budget in? Will you have a big dinner before going trick or treating or order a pizza? Are you going with them somewhere or are you handing out the candy? A nice new tradition to start is to serve apple cider or hot chocolate when they return, since they are generally cold when they come back inside. Start buying a few of the treats and candy each time you are at the store, to help cushion your budget. Being prepared and not spending too much are both great ways to have a stress free holiday.

Plan Your Christmas Traditions:

Create your Christmas card list. I know it may seem early to be thinking about Christmas at all, but what is one of the most time consuming and stressful parts of Christmas is Christmas cards. What is supposed to be a nice way to wish all your close friends and family well and to keep them up to date can turn into a dreaded event. This week all you need to do is create your Christmas card list, with names and addresses. This may be simple, or it may be a massive chore. If you don't have everyone's addresses gathered together already, this is a good time to start, but don't stress out. These assignments are to reduce holiday stress, just send out a few cards this year, and then save the cards you receive and update your address after Christmas for next year. Count how many people are on your list, how many cards and stamps do you need to purchase and send. If this amount looks a bit daunting for your budget or time consider shortening the list a bit. Consider who you want to give gifts to this year. Jot down a list of those people who are special enough in your life that you want to give them a Christmas gift. If you think of a great gift for them, write that down too, but don't commit to it yet. This week is just about brainstorming. Later you will figure out gifts for each person that you've listed that fit your budget and your time level, especially if the gift is homemade.

DAY 6 - Oct 13th:

TO DO TODAY:

Using lined paper, make a Christmas card list or generate one from your computer. Note beside any on that list which could be hand delivered, which could be emailed and pare down an expensive holiday tradition. At almost $1 per envelope, assess who you are sending cards to unnecessarily. However if this tradition brings you joy, you should continue what makes you happy.

HOLIDAY TIP OF THE DAY

Check your card supply today, add any needed supplies to the grocery list.

ORGANIZED TIP OF THE DAY

Is it garbage day tomorrow? Make a habit of having leftover meal night on those nights. Whether you heat everything for a smorgasbord, or create a stew or stir fry, this will keep your refrigerator clean and organized.
